Online Navigation and Trip Planning Course

For anyone interested in learning more about the resources for navigation and backcountry travel, this is the course for you.  This course will build on basic map skills and cover the online resources of GaiaGPS, CalTopo, and Google Earth.

This course will take place over zoom with screen sharing to make sure we can cover everything in the one hour allotted

The course will cover location determined by the instructor, except during a custom course, and then we can utilize an option the group is more familiar with.  This information is meant to give you the ability to work on trip planning on your own in the future over a variety of locations.  This information is great for winter backcountry travel but entirely transferrable to summer backpacking, mountaineering, and other trips.

Prerequisites: Knowing how to read basic maps, and how to identify ridges, valleys, and topo lines to determine general information about a certain area.

After this course: You should be able to find a trailhead you are looking to use, and with a mix of Caltopo, Google Earth and GaiaGPS, pick out an appropriate route to travel, with waypoints for possible decisions, and cross reference your GPX or KML file with satellite imagery to ensure the best route is chosen before heading into the backcountry.
