6-Day Glacier Climbing Course on Mount Baker
Destination: Mount Baker, Washington State
Duration: 6 Days (5 nights)
Ideal for: Climbers and alpine adventurers seeking solid glacier-travel and mountaineering skills, culminating in a summit attempt.
Course Overview
Join us for an immersive 6-day glacier mountaineering experience on the majestic Mount Baker. Starting with fundamental rope-skills and knots on rock, we’ll move into glacier travel, snow-anchor building, crevasse rescue, crampon/ice-axe work, and culminate—with favourable weather—in a summit push. Our goal is to equip you with the technical competence, confidence, and field experience to travel on glaciated terrain safely and effectively.
This course is structured to combine instruction, skill development, and a real alpine objective: embracing snow and ice, rope teams, alpine camping, and ultimately standing on a glaciated volcano’s summit. It’s designed to give you a full learning experience—not just a climb, but a mountaineering course.
Itinerary & Skills Breakdown
Day 1
Location: Mount Erie (nearby)
Focus: Knots, hitches, rope management; belaying, rappelling, fundamental rope-team techniques.
Evening camp: gear organization, discussion of mountaineering kit, and orientation.
Why this matters: Before venturing onto glacier terrain, we’ll build strong comfort with rope systems, belay/rappel skills, knots and rigging—core foundational skills for team safety that are easier to learn in a vertical environment.
Day 2
Transition to Mount Baker (typically the Easton Glacier or Squak Glacier)
Hike up to camp; establish our alpine base. This hike is around 4-5 hours and approximately 3000’ of elevation gain
Focus: Camp-craft on snow or high-camp terrain; packing a backpack, tent/shelter setup; introductory skills as time allows.
Day 3
Focus: Snow-anchor construction, equalization of systems, and start of crevasse-rescue fundamentals.
You’ll learn how to build snow anchors or deadman anchors, rig systems and begin practicing rescue scenarios
Day 4
Focus: Crampon and ice-axe technique, self-arrest, team self-arrest, roped glacier travel, fixed-line usage, belay along steep snow/ice, and preparation for summit push.
We will ensure each team member is proficient in moving efficiently and safely across snow and ice, managing gear, and working within a rope team.
Outcome: You’ll be ready for the high-effort summit day—confident in your movement techniques, tools and team communication.
Day 5
Summit day (weather & conditions permitting)
We’ll depart early (pre-dawn alpine start) from high camp, traverse glacier and snowfields, ascend to the summit of Mount Baker (10,781 ft / 3,286 m).
Highlights: Hours of experience roped travel, navigating numerous crevasses. Our last break is at the Sherman crater, where you can look at fumaroles before we begin the final push to the summit
Note: If weather or conditions require, we may adjust the schedule—moving skills days or making the summit bid on a different day to maximise success and safety.
Day 6
Wrap up instruction: review of all skills, Q&A, de-rig camp, descend back to the trailhead, return to civilization (aiming for Seattle by dinner).
Focus: Reflect on the experience, ensure you’re comfortable applying the skills independently, minor cleanup and logistics, conclusion of trip.
